NAGPUR: Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences (DMIMS) would be launching a new post-graduate course on medical education currently available only in three countries of the world.
World Health Organisation (WHO) sponsored course 'Master of Medical Education (MME)' will be launched from the next academic session (2011-12).
The Centre for Medical Education in Bangladesh has been authorized to run this course by the WHO for entire South East Asia region.
Apart from this centre, MME is available in United States and UK. "We have inked a memorandum of understanding with Centre for Medical Education that offers this course in Bangladesh. It was through our autonomous university Department of Medical Education Technology created recently," DMIMS vice-chancellor Dr Ved Prakash Mishra told reporters.
He informed that DMIMS had become first university in the country to start diploma in medical education that would be upgraded to MME from next session. He added that DMIMS was also first in India to launch a doctoral degree (PhD) in dental sciences along with diploma in the same subject. The senior academician said the university's 'village adoption scheme' was recommended by NAAC for replication in entire country. "We are running this scheme since our inception in 1997 where a student pursuing MBBS degree adopts five families in villages surrounding Sawangi, Wardha, where the college is situated," he said.
Dr Mishra, who was also senior member of Medical Council of India (MCI), stated that they had added students from physiotherapy, Ayurveda, dentistry and nursing to accompany MBBS students. "Now five students, who make up complete team, will look after the five families in the villages and will act as a bond between these patients and the college. Not only the poor villagers will be benefited but these students will also get first hand experience," he said.
